SAC Personal Trainers Help Guide Sunset High School Ski Team

Courtesy SAC Newsletter “Your Club Connection”

Published December 16, 2015

When SAC Personal Trainers Jason Mead and Joni Neilson were approached by the Sunset High School Ski Team and asked to develop a custom, sport-specific training program, their answer was simple; “We’d love to help!”

Working around the team’s schedule and budget,
they coordinated with ski-coaches Bill Derocher and Mike Woodson to develop a program that not only makes them more competitive, it helps create an emotional bond among the athletes.

“Because the team decided to do their warm-up’s and stretching after school as a self-supervised group, it makes them all responsible for and to each other,” notes Trainer Jason, “This increases teamwork and decreases tendencies toward a ‘clique’ mentality”.

Both trainers drive to increase the athletes skills and abilities of strength, balance, coordination and short-term endurance. Joni specializes in diverse high-intensity training routines, while Jason does more of the team’s core and weight training.

The athletes will continue training four evenings a week until the holiday break. Then (hopefully) they can try out their improved strength and skills on some real snow!

As PGE put it, “These pioneering companies led the way back in 2003/04 and continue to do so. They have contributed to the almost 1.6 billion pounds of CO2 our Clean Wind customers have avoided from entering the atmosphere since 2004. Join us in congratulating these companies on 10 years of making a difference in our environment!” We’d like to pass these kudos on to you. SAC In Your Community - The Portland Masters Track Club

by Sunset Athletic Club Staff

Published June 1, 2015

The Portland Masters Track Club’s annual Track & Field Meet will be held June 20-21, 2015. Sunset Athletic Club is proud to help sponsor this pro-health community organization.

The original Portland Track Club formed back in the 1960’s had members who were mainly college graduates that wanted to stay active in the sport. As the members got older, a natural progression followed in the 1970’s with the club becoming the Portland Masters Track Club, which is the oldest Masters club in the USA. Since then, the club has grown in numbers and is still very active in meets throughout the US. They are always looking for and encouraging new members. Their annual Track & Field Meet is also one of the oldest Masters meets in the USA. As they are known to say, “Remember, you’re never too old to compete!”

The club holds a weekly workout at Pioneer Stadium in Oregon City, Sundays from 9:30am to 11am. All are welcome (runners, jumpers, and throwers) and encouraged to join in. They work with all levels of athletes, so don’t be afraid to come out and have some fun, get some exercise, and best of all, meet new people.
